In this category there are several options equipment-wise each with certain benefits and disadvantages. Good old analogue tape recorders/dictaphones are excellent in terms of EVP capture as the frequency range captured is wide and the recordings are usually hiss-free however using tapes is quite frankly a pain and you can forget about putting your results on your pc unless you own the necessary equipment. Digital dictaphones are the next option, these discreet recording devices are somewhat costlier than their tape based counterparts but negate the need to keep a stock of tapes. The recordings are generally acceptable for investigation purposes and can be easily transferred to a pc however they do tend to suffer from a narrower frequency range than their tape counterparts and hiss can be evident. Basically if these are your preferred option go for those that offer high quality recordings without compression. Perhaps one the better devices to capture EVP is a mini-disc recorder. These benefit from the advantages of the both analogue tape recorders and digital voice recorders. A bonus and a shortcoming of these is that they have come down significantly in price due to the popularity of MP3 devices, but that lack of popularity means that the media discs they use may well become hard to find. However they usually allow for a mic out and quite often sport a PC link ( usually USB ) to allow easy sharing/storing of your recordings. Some MP3 devices also allow for recording but at this stage most models available are primarily for playback and the very nature of MP3 as a codec is to low a quality for serious capture of auditory phenomena.

Personal Lighting

The most essential piece of equipment really for the ghost hunter is a good torch. You are going to be in dark conditions for long periods, some locations do not have power and the last thing you need is not to be able to see where you are going and suffer the consequences of that! We recommend a good quality regulated LED torch.

One of these is going to give you a good run time, the regulation helps to maintain brightness and because there’s no bulb involved with LED lights they’ll stand up to the odd drop or two. Don’t be fooled by size either, many of the latest small led flashlights can really throw some serious light out and will fit nicely in your pocket or on a belt clip. If you use a red filter just like the military and pilots do you’ll maintain your own eyes night vision as well. We also recommend bringing a spare set of batteries as paranormal encounters can result in your batteries being drained of life.

Walkie Talkies

Two way radios or walkie talkies as they are better known are crucial on our paranormal investigations for several reasons. Number one is our groups are frequently seperated so we need to be in ready contact with each other. Reason number two is that we need also to be in contact from a health and safety point of view. Walkie talkies are not always needed on your investigations but they are well worth investing in for sure!

Air Temperature Readers

Here we are only going to recommend these type of temperature meters because they do not employ a projected beam of any sort. Unlike fluctuations in an EMF field we ourselves perceive temperature change though we are also equally prone to simply believing an area to be cold or suddenly go cold so we need to verify our perception. An air temperature meter will employ a sensor either within the unit or use an external sensor to gauge the temperature around itself and that usually means around you as these are carried most of the time. A beam type thermometer measures the temperature at the apex of it’s beam or beams so we are really talking temperature on a target not ambient air temperature and no beam type temperature meter can measure along its beam as one so called expert on Most Haunted claimed! Side Note – Temperature meters are available with backlights, useful for the paranormal investigator.

EMF Meters

The assumption is that paranormal activity can be registered as spirit energy harnesses electro-magnetic energy and therefore EMF meters have come into play. There are degrees of refinement and field ranges in the models available and some models are especially tailored towards the paranormal investigator by having backlights and covering the specific EMF fields most relevant to paranormal activity. Side Note -- If there is a group of you it is not necessary for everyone to have an EMF meter, it’s distracting having multiple meters registering fluctuations in vigil conditions.

Filtering down from their development for military and security forces there is a readily available range of see-in-the-dark equipment. Generally the equipment available achieve this function by two different methods and these are firstly by using a special chemical agent applied to a cathode tube to amplify existing light and secondly by using the same system we mentioned in the camcorder section, that is they employ an infra red light source and have the ability to view in this spectrum. The first type using the agent to amplify existing light are usually found under the heading ‘night vision’ and they are graded in generations with generation 4 being the current champion, albeit with a hefty price to match! Use of this type of light-enhancing night vision equipment will generally be fine in most conditions and where true 0 lux conditions ( pitch black ) prevail the units sometimes have their own IR illuminators though the strength and range of these illuminators varies. Nearly all of these type of devices require holding up to your eyes though and as a rule they magnify the field of view so if you intend to use such equipment seek out the lowest magnification possible because as paranormal investigators we tend to want to have as wide a field of vision as possible. One device we find particularly useful and use several of is known as the Night Max Digital Night Vision Viewer. This handy piece of equipment uses a bank of infra red l.e.d’s to illuminate an area and the image captured is displayed on a 2.5″ lcd screen on the rear of the unit. It negates the need to hold the device up to your eyes, its lens can be focused and the unit itself can be link to a Media storage device or Camcorder for recording.

Angel, Spirit Ouija Boards and Portals

We’re going to start by saying that before the use of these you should be familiar with their safe practice. What you do by using these boards or by using other portal devices is essentially open a gate through which any entity may pass and much like the personalities we meet in life it is possible to encounter both good and bad, dependant on your outlook, that is why it is necessary to have protection in place.Once you have opened the board and completed the session don’t forget to shut the gate by closing the board. There is no physical advantage in using either wood, slate, glass or plastic but the easy movement of the planchette ( pointer ) over the surface is required. To the paranormal investigator the results of using these devices can sometimes give us names and dates that can referrenced and even reasons why activity is taking place, this of course can greatly assist if say a resolvement is sought. The same rules that apply to boards also apply any other portal apparatus, such as scrying mirrors. On a psychic level we experiment with dowsing pendulums and use a glow-in-the-dark version as an interaction device.

Motion Sensors

These usually come as two slightly different types. The first type consists of two parts, one an emitter and one a receiver. An infra red light beam is emitted between the two parts and if this is broken an alarm will sound. This barrier-beam type is useful for locking off areas or perhaps even placing in amongst a group on vigils and passively monitoring the unit to see if the beam is disturbed. The other type is usually a motion detector unit. A single emitter unit that again emits a wide angle infra red light beam which if broken sounds an alarm or sometimes activates a light.

Digital Cameras

If you are serious about your ghost hunting then it would be a well to invest in a digital camera of reasonable quality. We say this for several reasons, firstly although images worthy of a closer look can be caught with say your mobile phone camera they are as yet inferior to a dedicated camera and most images from mobile phones are usually too poor to allow detailed examination. Secondly using a digital digital camera means you can easily review and share your results, cut out the need for developing and take far more pictures on an investigation. If your really serious then go for a digital SLR ( single lens reflex ) camera. In a slight defence of these more expensive toys we have noticed that they are better at not capturing dust particles etc which are usually labelled ‘orbs’ This could be down to the flash unit being further from the lens or indeed completely seperate and usually superior to that employed on point-and-shoot cameras. Side note – In dark conditions remember to let everyone know you are about to use flash photography.
