David Grimshaw was certain it was his mother Frances, who died at 87 last  year, after being shown the snap taken by a man demolishing the building.

The 59-year-old was stunned and added: ‘I’m totally convinced – no one else  looks like that. She had glasses and big earrings and she used to wear a dress  with a bow at the front.’

While some may think the ghost is just a mere reflection, Mr Grimshaw  remained convinced. He said: ‘She used to stand in that room for hours on the  phone – it was the guesthouse reception and she took bookings from there.

‘She would have been horrified if she had known the house was being   demolished because it was beautiful, so maybe that is why she’s turned up.’

The demolition team had felt an eerie chill at Meadowbank House. Worker  Stuart Shan said: ‘The day before we took the photo, I noticed the chandelier  swinging on its own.’

And demolition supervisor Robert  Johnson, who took the photo, added: ‘It wasn’t until I got home and showed  my wife that we spotted the woman.

‘You can see the jewellery on her and everything,’ he said. ‘I’ve never seen  anything like this before – the image is so clear. I’ve always been a sceptic  but I’ll have to believe in ghosts now.’

The building in Kendal, Cumbria, has now been demolished to make room for a  new commercial property.

JUNKIE rocker Pete Doherty has fled to Paris because he says the ghost of Amy Winehouse is haunting his London flat.

He told pals the 27-year-old’s spirit visited him three or four times at the pad close to where she died in Camden in July.

Doherty claims he saw ghostly images in his bedroom and her reflection in his windows late at night.

The Babyshambles frontman, 32, who was a friend of the Back to Black singer, says he is too frightened to return.

A pal said: “He is utterly convinced that he has seen her ghost.

“A lot of people will think his visions are probably drug-induced but he claims he is clean.”

Doherty was close friends with Amy and was left devastated after her death.

According to pals he was so distressed he couldn’t bring himself to go and pay his last respects.

The ghost, named Corky by regulars at the Court Oak pub in Harborne, Birmingham, apparently has very strong opinions about the wine list.

The pub, part of the Sizzling chain, is built on the site of a 17th century hanging ground, sparking speculation that Corky may be the ghost of someone who died there years ago.

Pub manager Anne Tyler said the ghost had given its opinion about the wine on offer every Halloween for the last few years.

She said smashed bottles of red and white house wine were discovered in the cellar until the selection was upgraded.

Nuala Gallagher, of Sizzling Pubs, said: “It isn’t so much things that go bump in the night as things going smash in the night at the Court Oak.

“People have spotted the figure of a man, aged about 60, behind the bar and the staff have felt his presence numerous times over the years.

“But it is Corky’s insistence on certain wines that set him apart as a spirit.

“It only ever happens at this time of year when Halloween is in sight. If the pub has a house wine that is not to his liking, he makes his feelings known by smashing bottle after bottle of it in the cellar until it is changed for a wine he approves of.

“He’s a bit of a wine snob, which is why he’s been named Corky by customers.”

STAFF at Warwick Castle

 have offered to help Prince William and Kate Middleton come to terms with news that their London residence is haunted – by holding a sleepover in their dungeons. An invitation to the castle has been extended to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, who plan to live in a Kensington Palace apartment. But the building is infamous for being the home of many ghosts and ghouls with the spirits of Queen Mary, Peter the Wild Boy and a sinister figure never identified. To help ease them in ahead of their move, Warwick Castle wants to welcome the couple to meet some of their spookiest residents. They’ve even offered the services of the castle’s para-psychologist to take them into the dungeons and possibly meet a selection of ghoulish residents including the wailing plague victims Milly, Molly and Manky. But it seems unlikely the offer will be accepted with the couple’s representatives claiming they are not aware of an invitation.

Built in the 12th century, Ettington Park, near Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, is one of the oldest buildings in the Midlands.

And things, it seems, regularly go bump in the night.

The hall was originally a family home to the Shirleys until Sewallis Shirley died in 1912. It then changed hands several times until 1935 when it became a nursing home.

During the Second World War it was turned into a Prisoner of War camp for Italian soldiers.

Its next incarnation was as a nightclub.

But it became derelict after being destroyed by fire in 1979, until it was rescued by a hotel chain in 1983 and restored to its former glory.

And it seems its chequered history has refused to allow the building to rest in peace.

Hotel guests have reported spooky goings-on, including:

l Footsteps have been heard clomping around empty rooms;

l Mysterious floating figures have stared out of windows;

l The sound of billiard balls clinking against one another in a deserted library;

l A floating candle was seen on an oak mantelpiece;

l An elderly Victorian lady has been seen in the Conservatory;

l Women’s voices have been heard in an empty drawing room;

l Books have been known to fly from shelves in the library;

l On the main staircase, the ghost of Mary, a servant who died in a fall, has been seen.

The reports have got the neo-Gothic mansion featured in an online directory of the country’s scariest overnight stays, www.hauntedhotelguide.com.

One guest, Stan Smit, has written on the website: “I stayed in the Old Tower Room, and I had to go downstairs to complain to the manager about the people in the room above me.

“I was awakened at 1.30am with them stomping around and banging doors.

“The manager stared at me for a moment, then said: ‘But sir, there is no room above yours, only the attic’.

“I then discovered that 200 years ago a woman had been hanged in the attic, directly above my room.”

A second guest said: “A friend of mine used to work here.

“In a particular room, the telephone used to ring the hotel reception switchboard, even though there was no-one staying in it.

“On another occasion the hotel had been gutted by fire. Workmen arrived on the first morning to commence the building’s reconstruction and noticed a white figure looking out of one of the first-floor windows.

“It wasn’t until they were well inside the premises that they noticed there was no room there. It had been destroyed by the fire.”

The hotel is set in 40 acres of rolling countryside six miles away from medieval Stratford.

It was used as a location for the 1963 film chiller The Haunting, one of the creepiest ghost movies ever made.

The Warwickshire hotel is not the only Midland stately home to make it on to www.hauntedhotelguide.com. Also included is Coombe Abbey, in Coventry, Warwickshire.

It is renowned for its ghostly inhabitants, one of whom is Abott Geoffrey, who was brutally murdered in 1345.

The website also covers the 16th century manor house Madeley Court. Guests have reported seeing mysterious dark shapes hovering by the windows, ghostly Victorian maids in the corridors and phantom monks in the gardens.

The NBC “Today” show recently interviewed the owners of the home, who are putting it up for sale. No, spooks haven’t chased them out. In fact, they describe it as a nice center-Colonial with a waterfront view, rather than an otherworldly portal with a gateway to hell in the basement. The home was the filming location for “The Amityville Horror,” and the owners describe it as a nice four-bedroom, with a pool. Asking price: just more than $1.3 million.

“It is not haunted,” said owner Odalys Fragoso, who also said she regularly has been asked about seeing flies or hearing voices imploring her to “Get out!” She also showed the “Today” crew how she has a home-theater in the basement, where the host was treated to a showing of the 1979 original.

It’s important to consider that the home in New Jersey is merely the Hollywood set for the 1979 film. The actual home exists, in – yes – Amityville, N.Y. If the past few owners of that home have been any indication, the only thing haunting the Amityville house has been curiosity-seekers, be it ones who merely drive by to those who go so far as to ring the doorbell.

The saga of the Amityville Horror is long and storied. In 1975 George and Kathleen Lutz moved into the Long-Island home with their children. Within a month they fled, claiming the home was haunted and that evil forces pushed them out. Their story became the basis of the 1977 Jay Anson book, “The Amityville Horror,” published with the declaration, “A True Story” in the title. Based on the book’s striking success, it was made into the 1979 film, starring James Brolin and Margot Kidder. The Lutzes’ claims immediately inspired controversy, with many researchers pointing out inconsistencies in their account of their time in the house. Perhaps the biggest blow came when attorney William Weber went on record – giving subsequent interviews – that he and the Lutzes’ concocted the haunting story one evening over many bottles of wine. The Lutzes strenuously objected, going so far as to sue Weber. But, the silver-tongued lawyer stood by his account of events.

Weber’s involvement with the Lutzes stemmed from his job as the attorney for Ronald DeFeo, Jr., who lived in the house with his parents and siblings in 1974. DeFeo, Jr., was convicted of shooting to death his mother, father, two brothers and two sisters. Currently serving a life sentence, DeFeo, Jr., was described by associates as a deeply troubled young man, so much so that news of his heinous crime did not shock them or even seem out of character. Weber went for an insanity defense, and reportedly collaborated with the Lutzes because their claims would call the murders further into doubt. Weber and the Lutzes supposedly were inspired to their wild tale be the recent success of the 1973 film “The Exorcist,” which is among the most successful movies ever made.

Enthusiasts of the Amityville Horror story (which has spawned several books and movies, including a poorly received 2005 remake), have often pointed to the most bizarre aspect of the DeFeo, Jr., case: That all the victims of the murder were shot lying face-down in their beds, with no signs of sedatives in their systems. Investigators find that bit of evidence incongruous, given how strikingly loud the shotgun report would have echoed throughout the house.

Mrs Berthelot read about the re-launch of Worstead’s New Inn in the EDP and was thrilled when she saw it was to become The White Lady; celebrating the ghost said to appear in the nearby church every Christmas Eve.

One hot summer’s day 36 years ago, Mrs Berthelot believes she unwittingly had her photo taken with the White Lady while visiting the church, and the EDP article prompted her to get in touch.

While one early account of the ghost’s appearance ends in the witness’s death, Mrs Berthelot, of Hipperson Close, North Walsham, says her own experience was of a healing and peaceful spirit presence.

In 1830 a man is said to have climbed into the church belfry on Christmas Eve, boasting that he would kiss the White Lady if he saw her. When he failed to reappear, his friends followed and found him huddled and terrified. He managed to whisper “I’ve seen her, I’ve seen her,” before dying.

Mrs Berthelot, now 79, says she had never heard of the ghost when she, husband Peter and their 12-year-old son David visited the old weaving village of Worstead on Saturday August 2 1975, during one of their regular holidays in Norfolk from their then home in Essex, and went inside the church to escape the heat.

She had suffered ill health for some time and remembers that she was taking antibiotics for an infection and felt unwell that day. As her husband and son wandered round the empty church taking photos, Mrs Berthelot sat close to the font on a wooden bench and prayed for recovery, unaware that her husband had caught her on camera too. She remembers feeling warm, relaxed and at peace.

Months later, back in Essex, the family and their lodger Barbara decided to have a slide show and view their summer snaps for the first time. They were astounded when Barbara asked: “Who’s that sitting behind you Di?”

Mrs Berthelot said: “I looked up, saw the white figure and my feet started to ‘tingle’. This sensation eventually engulfing the whole of me. It was a pleasant, comforting feeling.”

The photo appears to show a woman dressed in light-coloured, old-fashioned clothes, with a bonnet, sitting on the bench directly behind Mrs Berthelot.

The following summer Mrs Berthelot says she went back to the church and showed the slide to the late Vicar of Worstead, Rev Pettit, who told them about the legend and said there was talk that the White Lady was a healer who appeared when there was sickness.

For many years Mrs Berthelot said she experienced the same tingling sensation whenever she looked at the photo, although this has since stopped.

“I’ve been back to the church many times since but nothing ever happened again,” she said.

Mrs Berthelot has now presented a copy of her photo to Dennis Gilligan, the new owner of Worstead’s pub, who decided on the name change after finding an ageing newspaper article about the White Lady when he moved into his own home in the village.

Mr Gilligan plans to frame and display Mrs Berthelot’s photo. He suspects the White Lady may have started drifting across to the pub since it was renamed as lights appear to turn themselves on and off without human intervention – and he was recently touched on the shoulder while alone in the cellars

 IL on July 30, 1915.  Lizzy Martin, the wife of prominent Murphysboro attorney, James Martin, was found brutally murdered in her home on North Ninth Street.  She had been savagely beaten on her head and upper body.  The only suspect in this horrendous crime was the Martins live-in handyman, a negro by the name of Joe DeBerry.  At first, he denied killing Mrs. Martin.  After intense questioning by the Jackson County Sheriff, DeBerry confessed to bludgeoning Mrs. Martin with a fireplace poker.  The reason for this crime was never clear.  Some say he had been accused of stealing and had been caught by Mrs. Martin.  Others said that he killed her because she refused to give him 5o cents for a haircut.

One month after the murder,

DeBerry was found guilty and sentenced to death by hanging.  October 16, 1915 was the day of the execution.  The Murphysboro Daily Independent newspaper reported that “fog hung over the city like a cloak of death.”  Jackson County Sheriff James White deputized 2000 citizens of Murphysboro so that all could obtain a good view of the hanging.  Executions were very good for business in Murphysboro.  Hotels, restaurants and shops were all crowded with customers.  The entire downtown had a carnival atmosphere to it.

DeBerry was hung on the same scaffold that was used to hang Charlie Birger several years later.  Once the trap door was sprung, it took De Berry 16 minutes to die.

After the death of Lizzy’s husband,

 James, rumors began to circulate that the majestic Victorian home that they had lived and died in was haunted.  During the 1940s a fire destroyed the top portion of the stately Victorian home that the Martins once lived in.  The 2 story Victorian home was remodeled into a one story bungalow.  Starting in the late 1940s, occupants of the house would report mysterious sounds.  It is not know if the strange creaks and other noised were due to the brutal murder that took place there or if it was the result of extensive remodeling that perhaps the spirits of the Martins did not approve of.  Many residual hauntings have been reported wherever there was a tragic event or remodeling of an older structure.

The trailer starts out innocently enough. This is again done through home video cameras and shows two girls playing in the backyard and having fun in 1988. But pretty soon it starts flashing into creepier and creepier scenes.

The “Paranormal” trailer also says the promising words “DISCOVER THE SECRET BEHIND THE ACTIVITY.” After that, it shows the two girls chanting “Bloody Mary” into the mirror. Could this children’s game really be the key to something?

The first “Paranormal Activity” movie came out in 2007. Done on a low budget, it nevertheless earned $193,355,800 and was praised by critics for its light touch in getting the audience afraid. It didn’t jump out at you like many other horror movies. A prequel, “Paranormal Activity 2,” was released in 2010. That one didn’t earn quite as high of praise in terms of reviews, but it wasn’t panned, either, and it took in a pretty penny.
