Falcon Rest is a historic gem that also happens to be haunted. Just southeast of Nashville in McMinnville, it’s close enough for a day trip or just far enough for a weekend getaway.
Clay Faulkner, creator of “Gorilla Pants” (jeans so strong even a gorilla couldn’t tear them apart), promised his wife, Mary, “the finest mansion in the region” if she’d move from downtown McMinnville out to the country and next to the manufacturing plant. Mary agreed, and Faulkner proceeded to build a solid-brick, 10,000-square-foot mansion for his family that had all of the “modern conveniences” — electric lights, indoor plumbing, central heat, and more.
Faulkner passed away in his home in 1916, and the house had several purposes, including stints as a hospital and a nursing home, before the current owners, George and Charlien McGlothin, purchased it at auction in 1989. After 4 1/2 years of restoration, Falcon Rest opened as a bed & breakfast in 1993 and now offers daily tours, fine dining, Victorian tea, an 1890s department store, dinner theater and a friendly ghost.
Falcon Rest staff and visitors have reported whistling, items moved, sounds and more. One visitor saw a lady wearing a bonnet and a long dress come into the mansion’s front door. When she asked her tour guide about reenactors, she was surprised to hear that the front door was locked and there was no one in costume that day. Immediately after, the ladies were startled by a loud, explosive crash. The ornately carved mirror hanging above the dining room buffet had fallen off the wall and to the floor, without hitting anything on the buffet or breaking the mirror. Not only were the screws still in the wall, but the wire hanger was intact as well.
