Underground Caverns

The Well in the cavesThere’s a touch of mystery to the entire labyrinth of underground caverns occupying the center of Nottingham, most of which have been sealed up or lost, but not this lair!

Tiggua Cobaucc was the name given to this area and it literally means ‘Place of Caves’  There were advantages and disadvantages to living underground. Early cave dwellers avoided the window tax laws for a start and their abodes kept an even temperature throughout the year but on the flip side they were cramped, lightless places, often the breeding grounds of disease. In the middle ages the networks were bustling and even a tannery existed here, it must have reeked! Diversions were afforded though in the subterranean gambling dens and taverns and no doubt some cave networks even had chapels for forgiveness the morning after! Eventually only the very poor continued to use the caves as they became cheaply rented out cellars of houses built above.

Fast forward to the Second World War and the low retreat of these caverns became shelters from the bombs of the blitz above. If ever there was a place that has witnessed the low ebbs of unenviable existences this is it. Such places are not at rest, they abound with reminders, ghosts of how it once was. Staff and visitors have witnessed these and a walk in this dark place stirs something within as you brush by things forgotten but not yet finished. A draw for those of us who seek other worldly echoes!
