Of The Coastal Forts.

Nothe Fort EntryBegun in 1860 Nothe Fort was one of many coastal defence forts built in the Victorian era following concerns over the strength of the French Navy. Championed by Lord Palmerston, Prime Minister at the time the forts took shape it was completed at a cost of £5.5million in todays’ money.
Classically these forts were ‘D’ shaped gun batteries built on several levels, mostly within the ground connected by tunnel walks and protected by immensely thick walls, but by the time the forts were completed the French threat had passed. Still, large numbers of soldiers spent many years manning these, effectively sitting on top of great quantities of explosive gunpowder for the huge guns, which never fired in anger.

By the Second World war when invasion looked likely many forts were updated with modern coastal guns and anti-aircraft emplacements, as was the case at Nothe Fort.
In the 1950’s much of the forts fell out of military use, many became very neglected and were the haunt of vandals. Nothe fort was sold on in 1961 to the local authority where much of its fabric suffered such a fate, only a section of the deep magazine level was adapted as a civil administration nuclear shelter during the cold war period.

Nothe fort was lucky though as thanks to the efforts of many it was saved and increasingly restored to now stand as one of the best kept examples of its’ kind in the land.
Here a lone ghostly gunner whistles his way around the many dark tunnels of Nothe fort and figures are seen in locked off areas. It became known as a very scary place to be and some staff refuse to even go in certain areas by themselves. Perhaps this stronghold has served to keep in shades of its former occupants as opposed to keeping the enemy out? Would you like to see if something other-worldly stirs in the walls of Nothe Fort? If you have the nerve your welcome to fall into line with our investigative troop to find out!
