The history of Burton Court. - View Gallery
Burton Court, near Leominster rises on the bones of a probable Norman stronghold on the once troublesome Welsh border. By archaeological evidence this vantage point seems to stretch back in use to even the Romans and later Henry the Fifth used this asset and assigned troops here to watch the movements of the rebellious Welsh Prince Owen Glendower. Burton Court was the residence of the Squires of Eardisland who would hear judicial cases in the great hall. They occupied and added to the fortified manor right up until 1865. It was then acquired by an archetypal Victorian gentleman by the name of John Clowes and passed down to his son Col. Peter Legh Clowes and Miss Warren on their marriage. In the easy years before the Great War Burton Court realized its zenith and saw a grand alteration of its appearance. It is recorded that at least 23 staff were present covering the duties of the estate of this time. The course of the great war changed matters however for the Clowes family as their only child Warren Peter Clowes was killed in action. For a great length of time thereafter his mother saw to it that everything would be in black, even down to the dogs!. Widowed in 1925 she alone up until 1949 resided here quietly, perhaps still mournfully and Burton Court became forgotten.
Never was an era so out of sympathy to needs of great houses than the 1950-60's and soon enough the estate was broken up but fortuitously for this great house a saviour would come. In 1960 the house was purchased as a home and with intent for a soft fruit growing enterprise, it has remained in the loving care of the Simpson family ever since. But what of the ghostly nature of this many layered site? Well Burton Court has rarely seen a public paranormal investigation but we can reveal that when we were invited to this location we expected to find a property given over to today's corporate needs and sanctified in all the wrong ways because of this. Instead we found ourselves heading down a quiet road to a venue whose genuineness is hard to find now and we entered a proverbial ghost hunters delight! As we walked the areas we'll be investigating its' beauty and even a touch of solemness became apparent. Here there were no overly gimmicky themed displays, this was a home but from a more genteel era.. Down dark corridors we proceeded and into abandoned rooms we went many strewn with artifacts of past lives simply abandoned. Every turn seemed to present us with echoes so strong that we felt we had disturbed the past still in motion. We could sense those past souls waiting to come forward and by all accounts they already have but could they be just the tip of a paranormal iceberg waiting to sink the doubts of the doubters? Join us at this truly unique venue and maybe hope for your rational sides' sake that we are wrong!
