The history of The Guildhall.

The wooden Guildhall of Leicester One of the best wooden halls in the country that has been host to various roles over its many centuries existence. It began life in 1390 to act as both a pious and civic hall for the powerful Gild of Corpus Christi until The Reformation. Thereafter it was essentially the civic centre for Leicester and was its Town Hall. In this respect it also acted as a judicial building for court hearings and even had within its walls a bedroom for “Mr Recorder” who was a judicial officer of some standing and who’d preside over the cases heard there. Cleverly the building incorporated an off-set jury room aside from the great hall where members of the jury could hear cases without being seen to prevent reprisals. Here then was a building where people would have stood trial for their lives on one day whilst great banquets and plays would have taken place on the next! By 1632 the library of the old town had also moved here making this the third oldest library in the land. But soon another civil function was administered from here, that of policing the streets, so that by the early 1800’s Leicester’s Police force were in residence. Some alteration of the property took place to allow for a house for the Chief Constable, a charge room and three cells during this tenancy.

However the ever rising population of Leicester meant that The Guildhall was simply not able to play host to so many bodies and these moved on to larger or purpose made centres. By 1876 the building was in a poor condition and a hotchpotch of annexes made nearby shopkeepers and factory owners consider this an eyesore worthy of demolition. Thankfully Leicester Archaeological and Historic Society successfully saved it by petitioning the council and in 1922 a restoration began that is still undertaken where befitting in its present role of a museum. This is a location unlike that of a family residence and the drama of its social history has perhaps a harder edge that’s reflected in the paranormal phenomena encountered here. Anything from the interesting old bible left out on the library table that’s often found opened on a certain page if closed shut right up to the frightening elevation and pinning of a member of staff to a landing window is possible here! We’ll have with us Lee Gilbert, expert in knowing the secrets of this location to test our nerves and yours if you are really ready to take The Guildhall to the extreme!!
