The history of Ruthin Gaol.
The long time abode of the guilty and often not guilty Ruthin Gaol has seen its share of souls who were judged to be on the wrong side of the law. Built in the 18th century to take over the penal duties of the old gaol which was once housed in the nearby courthouse it has seen the confinement of men, women and even children on whom various degrees of justice were administered from fines to hard labour right up to whipping and of course death, the utlimate penalty. Once public affairs, executions were carried out in St. Peter's square, Ruthin and in this respect Father Charles Mahoney a Franciscan priest met his cruel end being hung, drawn and quartered in 1679. Subdued later and within gaol walls the death sentence was still administered and presently the execution cell at Ruthin depicts the last of its inmates to meet the hangman's rope. At the beginning of the 1900's William Hughes a miner from Wrexham shot his wife dead and subsequently handed himself in to face the inevitable result. He was hanged from the gallows at Ruthin, a short walk from his cell. The gaol closed in 1916 but saw service as a munitions factory during World War Two and was used by the council in various capacities thereafter. Now a popular attraction Ruthin Gaol offers an insight into a somber, cruel place from the past. Yet it seems the stains of life there may be noticed again but not as modern displays intending to show such things would like. Something seems to still stir behind its gates..
A finely dressed little girl walks the paths once taken by murderers, giggling as she goes by, shadows move in empty cells and heavy doors slam themselves shut! The regime of the prison seems to continue, perhaps some inmates have found their sentences continue, a little longer than they thought they would? We ask you to do some time with us at Ruthin to test the claims, it would be a ghost-hunting crime not to!
