The history and mystery of St. Mary's Guildhall
To the casual visitor Coventry may seem a fairly young city but its roots go deep and much of what stands today came after the city was greatly damaged during WW2. Its great Cathedral burnt one memorable night along with many properties in a fiery inferno. But our venue the Guildhall just escaped and still stands proud with those few other buildings that witnessed the growth of this city from the wealth of cloth production.
The Guildhall rose around 1340 and was steadily added to until 1460 but it is said that it included parts of a 12th Century Castle. If this is so we have a building that aside from being the home to the merchant guilds of St. Mary's and Holy Trinity and seat of the towns local government had within its foundations a somber defensive building.
But aside from its civic aspect the Guildhall has flirted with some of historys' colourful characters. In the turbulent time of the War of the Roses Henry the Sixth and his wife Margaret of Anjou spent much of their time here and in return Henry granted Coventry the right to call itself a county.
Now to a lady associated with many an historic property, Mary Queen of Scots. In 1569 and by order of Elizabeth I she was moved from Tutbury to reside here under guard within the chamber of the Mayoress's Parlour.
A regular troupe of players used the Guildhall and we know that a young William Shakespeare visited as part of a similar troupe of actors or to be entertained. Certainly this place held a place in his heart, no doubt spurred by his many visits!
The Guildhall passed through the ensuing centuries absorbing the ups and downs of the drama of life within its walls. It received a restoration in 1824 but those revived walls would shake little more than a century later amidst the bombs that took away much of Coventry. The recent life of this old building is more genteel but when the doors close at night something still stirs..
A plethora of activity reigns here, shadowy figures are observed, strange lights abound and even objects are moved. Mere imaginings or something more? In 1985 a photo captured a mysterious hooded figure, aside the head table, amidst the crowd of an official function who posed unobserved by no one at the gathering. We will debut the first public investigation of St. Mary's Guildhall and awake the unaddressed, if you have the nerve you're cordially invited..
