The history of Warwick Castle.
Above the river Avon is the great stronghold of Warwick castle, held from Saxon times and supposedly built upon an early cathedral its’ walls have never been shaken by battle but have certainly been stirred by the drama of history. Many powerful earls have called Warwick castle ‘home’. Guy de Beauchamp was one such Earl. Known as the black dog of Arden by Piers Gaveston favourite of Edward II this was one Earl who Gaveston would find could bite! Gaveston had disobeyed a banishment agreement and was seized by Guy who tried him in the great hall of the castle, found him guilty and led him kicking and screaming to a site nearby known as Blacklow Hill where he was summarily beheaded!
The power of the Earls of Warwick could influence the nation but was more often felt locally especially by lawbreakers who’d find themselves occupying the dungeon, some to face the ultimate penalty!
The castle has also seen death through act of murder when on the 30th of September of 1628 Sir Fulke Greville, owner of Warwick castle was stabbed in London by Ralph Heywood his old servant. Heywood had argued with Greville believing he’d been cheated by him in his will. He struck Greville in his rage and then aghast at what he’d done turned the knife upon himself. Greville however did not die there but suffered a long and painful death in his chambers within the South tower of the castle. His ghost is said to emerge from his portrait and roam the chambers in what is now known as the ghost tower.
Within the castle grounds a ghostly black dog once walked whose sighting was said to be an omen of doom. This spiritual hound came about when a servant called Moll Bloxham was caught selling goods from the castle stores. She was no doubt punished severely for her crime and vowed 'to get them haunted' She returned after death in the form of this spectral beast whose shade was finally exorcised when trapped within Ceasers' Tower at the castle whereupon it leapt from a window into the river below and vanished. Curiously though to this day a kennel is still kept for a dog that shouldn’t exist?
Sightings of a ghostly lady, soldiers, children and servants abound and it all became a bit too much for a cleaner who vowed never to return after a particularly frightening incident. This many layered, ancient site is soaked with the drama of many generations yet rarely has a paranormal investigation been carried out there. So what could come forward and what secrets will emerge as we step forward for our ghost hunt in this fortress of whispers? There is only one way to find out..
