The Horror of the Jail.
Bodmin Moor can be a bleak place, once it’s isolation alone easily trapped the unaware. How much more bleak it must have seemed for those captured prisoners of war of the 18th Century who were sent here and made to erect a building that would most assuredly hold them upon its’ fringe.
Here they shared their fate with other prisoners. Civillians, men, women and children forcibly toiled away their respective sentences, some for petty crimes, some even for just for being in debt. Others though would justly or un-justly have met a constricting rope that took their last breath.
Although the first prison to use cells rather than have communal blocks conditions were bad and up to 10 prisoners per small cell would be huddled in together.
Debtors were freed from imprisonment under the Debtors Act of 1869 but the spare room afforded was soon utilised by the Admiralty and a Naval wing was established. An even harsher regime saw to it that the men there were controlled and those who could expect release were kept just fit enough, ready for battle.
One bit of surviving grafitti has summised it quite nicely really, it simply reads..’Hell’
